Private Client is generally accepted as referring to the business conducted by solicitors for non-commercial clients. The nature of such work has different facets, but the most popular concern management of finances, especially wills and probate, and tax matters. Private Client can also touch on work for charities (as non-commercial enterprises).
At The City Law School, the Private Client elective provides an understanding of the legal, practical and procedural issues relating to elderly clients and those wishing to plan what will happen to their estate after their death. It covers all aspects of will drafting, the outlines of trust drafting, and awareness of the tax implications of both. It enables those choosing it to advise clients on the key issues of tax, finance, benefits and legal capacity, and gives practice in drafting relevant documents based on an understanding of the substantive law and procedural requirements in this practice area.
